Greetings! The Specialist Staff at Blanchard Valley School would like to take this time to thank every one who helped with the renovations of our therapy room. What was once a conglomerated jungle of equipment, desks and people, has become a beautiful facility that we are very proud to have. We now all have our own desks with efficient filing systems and a cabinet for every tool of therapy we posses in our artillery. It is so nice to be organized and clutter-free! Please feel free to stop by and take a look at what a professional room we have to provide the services we are so proud of at the school.
The 2007-2008 school year sure has flown by as we are already drawing near to IEP/MFE season. But before that happens, we are excited to help celebrate MRDD month in March. So please take the time to tell someone you know who might have special needs, how proud you are of them and what they contribute to your life- it really makes a difference!
April is national Occupational Therapy month and I would like to take the time to explain OT and how we work in this particular part of Blanchard Valley Center. My name is Julie Muchiarone and I am an Occupational Therapy Assistant. Angela Bair is an Occupational Therapist and between the both of us, we are proud to say we have 40 plus years of experience between us. Angela works with Early Intervention (ages 0-3 years) and the school age students (6-22 years). I work with the Pre-School classes (3-6 years) and the school age students.
Occupational Therapy deals specifically with promoting independence in all aspects of life, from birth to our golden years. We work very hard to help people become functional and independent at home, work and school. It is often heard saying that we provide the “skills for the job of living”.
Angela works very closely with Help Me Grow providing services such as infant screening for delays in development and aiding those children who might be considered at risk. She is frequently seen zooming out the door on her way to a home visit to help a parent. When she is at school, she is can be found helping Early Intervention students work on learning how to eat, play or just be independent with daily living activities such as putting on a coat or learn how to wash their hands. Blanchard Valley School in conjunction with Help Me Grow has developed one of the top-rated Early Intervention programs in Ohio! They offer at home services with very flexible times to working parents.
When I work with pre-school, I address educational skills such as learning how to hold scissors or crayons correctly, following a class routine and promoting appropriate socialization through out the school day. Sensory integration is one of my favorite areas to practice and learn about. In school age, we also work on functional skills such as eating independently, proper seating to promote learning and vocational skills with the goal of leading a productive, meaningful life in the community. Last but not least, we aid in developing life-enriching skills such as swimming or art along with going out and about for special outings.
Both Angela and I always take pride in providing a service to the community from such a great place as Blanchard Valley Center. It has also been our pleasure to work out in the Findlay-Hancock County area, helping individuals become independent and lead meaningful lives to their fullest potential through Occupational Therapy. Thank you and have a wonderful Spring!
