Early Intervention 2

My name is Keely Wymer and I am in my sixth year
of teaching Early Intervention at
For the last few weeks our toddler classes
have been reading the book, Big Red Barn, and learning about
different farm animals as well as introducing the concept of BIG and
little. We discuss the names of the animals using pictures, words,
signs, and objects along with making the animal sounds. To go
along with the book, we have been singing the “Old McDonald” song, which
also teaches the animal sounds, and we have provided a variety of “farm
like” toys and objects in the classroom for the children to play with.
The children really seem to enjoy this unit!
Our next unit, which will be starting in
March, will be The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This
also seems to be a popular unit with the children. With this unit
we will be introducing the concept of counting. We even introduce
the children to the kinds of foods that the caterpillar eats in the
story, by actually tasting them.
Both units are lots of fun, but I must say
that we are looking forward to doing The Very Hungry Caterpillar
to start getting us ready for spring!
Sincerely your,
Keely Wymer,

Early Intervention 1
First of all, we in the Early Intervention 1
Class would like to wish everyone a super duper new year for 2008!!! We
have some really exciting things happening in our classroom and are even
more excited to be the first group to talk about it on the internet. Our
Early Intervention 1 Classroom consists of our classroom teacher and
assistant. Our teacher is Linda Benjamin who has been at BVC now since
1985 and just this past December has completed 35 years with County
Boards of MR/DD. She has had the privilege of being a part of the growth
and success of five county programs as well as the State Dept of MR/DD
and what they have provided to exceptional individuals over these past
35 years.
Our Early Intervention 1 Classes consist of
three different toddler groups. We have one group that meets in the
morning on Monday and Tuesdays, another class that meets in the
afternoon on Monday and Tuesday and the third group which meets on
Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Each class is scheduled for half- day
sessions and has no more than eight children in each class. Each child
may have a language, motor, social, self-care or cognitive need. While
the children are here, they receive the specialized services of Physical
therapy, Occupational therapy and/or Speech therapy if their
individualized plan indicates a need for that specialized service. We
also have infants whom we serve on home based services who may be too
fragile to come into the program or too young (under 18mos.). Our early
intervention team which includes any or all of the specialists, Dodi and
myself, try to make a visit to the infant’s home at least once a month.
In the classroom, we spend a lot of time
working on the special needs of each child and we spend quite a bit of
time reading books for young children. Every two weeks, we focus on a
new book. During this time the activities we do in the classroom focus
on that specific book whether it is an art project, a music activity or
a learning center which may involve interaction skills with their
classmates or thinking and reasoning skills.
This year we are really excited and it is
a first for our Early Intervention Dept. to have a Grad Student be
apart of our classroom activities. Miss Lenore Haymaker will be working
with us. Lenore is completing her Graduate Studies at
We are looking forward to an exciting winter
and spring and would love to have you visit our classroom at any time.
We love to “show off” what we are doing.
Sincerely yours,
Linda Benjamin, EI Specialist
